ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL OF OAS ATTENDS SUMMIT OF CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY LEADERS

  July 5, 2006

Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin represented the Organization of American States (OAS) at the Twenty-Seventh Meeting of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), held in St Kitts and Nevis under the Chairmanship of that country’s Prime Minister, Denzil Douglas.

The newly-elected President of Haiti, René Préval, and the new Prime Minister of Jamaica, Portia Simpson-Miller, are among those attending the meeting that ends tomorrow.

Ambassador Ramdin noted that the presence of Préval, the recently-elected President of Haiti, was an important signal of the continuing support internationally and regionally for Haiti. In addressing the CARICOM leaders Ramdin reaffirmed, on behalf of Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, the OAS’s continued support to the new government and the people of Haiti.

“We also offered to work together with the Caribbean Community on matters relating to the sub-region, such as in Haiti and Guyana,” Ambassador Ramdin said. The Assistant Secretary General also informed the heads of government of CARICOM on OAS efforts and assistance towards the holding of general elections in Guyana later this year.

While at the conference, Ambassador Albert Ramdin took the opportunity to conduct bilateral meetings with other regional organizations with which the OAS maintains a close working relationship. In this connection, the Assistant Secretary General met with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Don McKinnon, and discussed issues relating to the political, economic and social development of CARICOM countries.

Ramdin also continued discussions with the Director-General of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Dr. Len Ishmael, on strengthening cooperation in the areas of technical cooperation, natural disasters, tourism and governance. An OAS technical team is expected to visit the OECS Secretariat in St. Lucia to discuss concrete projects and programs.

Assistant Secretary General Ramdin explained that “the countries of the Caribbean region are making great efforts to strengthen their economies by working together and putting in place mechanisms to address the social and economic challenges in building sustainable economies, and in this regard the OAS needs to support these initiatives as it strengthens the hemispheric stability and security environment.”
