Agreed at OAS Headquarters in Washington D.C., on August 30, 2002.
High level Delegations from Belize and Guatemala, headed by their respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Assad Shoman and H.E. Gabriel Orellana Rojas, met in Washington D.C. from August 26 to 30, 2002, with the Facilitators, Sir Shridath Ramphal and Mr. Paul Reichler, in the Facilitation Process aimed at proposing a solution for the just, equitable and definitive resolution of their territorial differendum. The Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States, also participated.
The Facilitators completed their consultations with the Parties, and based on these discussions are confident that they will be able to produce their final proposals in the very near future. In compliance with their mandate, the Facilitators have deposited their work to date with the Secretary General.
In order to complete the technical aspects of the proposals, the Facilitators have requested from the Parties and from the Secretary General a brief extension of the Facilitation Process. The Parties and the Secretary General have agreed accordingly to an extension, not to exceed thirty days, to enable the technical work to be completed.
The Facilitators also recommended, and the Parties accepted, to extend all confidence-building measures and mechanisms agreed since the beginning of the Facilitation Process in March of 2000 for a similar period of thirty days.
