OAS SECRETARY GENERAL CONGRATULATES MEXICO’S PRESIDENT-ELECT

  September 5, 2006

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, this afternoon congratulated President-Elect Felipe Calderón of Mexico, after the Federal Electoral Tribunal issued a unanimous decision certifying the final results and officially declaring Calderón the winner of the presidential contest.

Once he learned of today's decision, Insulza telephoned the Mexican President-Elect to express his best wishes for the new government’s success. Felipe Calderón will take office for a six-year term on December 1.

For his part, Calderón thanked the OAS Secretary General and extended an invitation for him to attend the inauguration ceremonies, an invitation that Insulza accepted.
