OAS ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL CALLS FOR CONTINUED DIALOGUE
IN ECUADOR

  August 30, 2005

GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador - The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of the American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin, today urged Ecuadorians to continue a constructive dialogue and called for a renewed commitment by the executive and legislative branches, as well as other political, economic and social bodies, to work together to tackle the important problems facing that country.

Ramdin, who is in Guayaquil participating in the Third Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Rural Life in the Americas, talked about the threats to democracy and other challenges faced by some countries of the hemisphere. "Ecuador like many countries, faces its own challenges in this regard,” he said.

Ramdin also reaffirmed the support that the OAS General Secretariat has given the Ecuadorian government’s efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions, in particular the process of selecting the Supreme Court. He recalled that last week, the OAS had observers in Ecuador who met with government ministers, political parties, diplomats, representatives of the United Nations, non governmental organizations and others.

The Assistant Secretary General underscored the hope that this effort “will help strengthen the process of judicial selection and contribute to the country’s advancement in democratic consolidation and its development agenda.” He affirmed that Secretary General José Miguel Insulza and the OAS value the support that the observation mission has received from President Alfredo Palacio.

The region’s 34 ministers of agriculture are participating in the three-day ministerial meeting, held every two years within the framework of the Summit of the Americas process.
