OAS Secretary General Praises Agreements Reached in EU-LAC Summit

  May 20, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today praised the Association Agreements between Europe and Central America, and the Trade Agreements between Europe and Peru and Colombia, signed during the European Union-Latin America and Caribbean Summit held in Madrid. He also said the formal institution of said instruments “clearly reflects that the ties between these two regions have become stronger and that in the two continents it is understood as a strategic alliance.”

The top OAS official also said that “on a global stage that is ever more complex, consensus between Latin America and the Caribbean and Europe around the main issues on the international agenda is unavoidable and absolutely necessary.” In this context, he added that “dialogue in the two regions on issues of politics, trade, energy and security must be permanent and institutional, especially if our perspectives on these subjects are in agreement with each other, with respect to their diagnosis and possible solutions.”

The Secretary General highlighted the role of Spain in the European-Latin American and Caribbean rapprochement produced during the time period that the Spanish government has been at the head of the European Union.

Secretary General Insulza also highlighted the importance of the approval during the bi-continental meeting of the Strategic Plan of the European Union with Mexico and of the EU-Chile Association for Development and Innovation, insisting on “the value of all these mechanisms in the struggle of our regional countries to overcome the harshest aspects of poverty.”
