NEW PERMANENT OBSERVER OF FRANCE PLEDGES CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR OAS

  November 3, 2004

Ambassador Georges Vaugier presented credentials at the Organization of American States (OAS) today, after renewing France’s strong support of the Western Hemisphere body’s programs and activities.

In delivering his credentials to Acting Secretary General Luigi Einaudi, Ambassador Vaugier lauded OAS efforts relating to the consolidation of democracy, human rights protection, promotion of the rule of law and social justice and anti-poverty initiatives, saying they enjoyed the support of France. He underscored as well his government’s interest in deepening its cooperation with the OAS to tackle such other scourges as international terrorism, drug trafficking and HIV/AIDS.

Pointing to historical and other ties between France and the Americas, the new French envoy pledged his Observer Mission’s support for the OAS’ efforts to tackle the many challenges it faces on a number of fronts, including stimulating economic development to benefit a great number of citizens.

In welcoming Ambassador Vaugier, the Acting Secretary General made mention of France’s active participation and support of the Organization since it gained permanent observer status.

Einaudi hailed the historical and other ties between the OAS and France, and thanked the French government for its solidarity around a number of issues, including support for OAS engagement in Haiti, and announced a “very important” memorandum the OAS signed with the United Nations in New York this week, providing for OAS participation in facilitating elections that are being scheduled in Haiti.

Before his current assignment, Ambassador Georges Vaugier served at headquarters in Paris, and also as ambassador in Slovakia. He has also served as ambassador in Nicaragua and has held other diplomatic positions, including in Washington, Berlin and Brussels.
