OAS SECRETARY GENERAL TO TRAVEL TO CANADA

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, tomorrow will make his first official visit to Canada since being elected to head the Organization.

Insulza will meet in Ottawa with Canadian officials, including Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew, to discuss how to strengthen democracy and good governance in the hemisphere, including issues such as the upcoming elections in Haiti, and the peace process in Colombia. Secretary General Insulza will also discuss preparations for the next OAS Conference on International Law, which will be held in Ottawa October 22-26, to mark the 15th anniversary of Canada’s entry into the Organization.

The Secretary General will meet with senior officials at the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to discuss new CIDA-OAS multinational programs based on the principles of horizontal cooperation.

Insulza will also participate in a dialogue with Canadian civil society organizations and the diplomatic community in Ottawa on the topic of governance in the Americas.
