  July 16, 2010

The workshop on Social Policies and International Cooperation, titled, "Challenges for the Ministries of Social Development and the Inter-American Social Protection Network," concluded today in Brasilia, Brazil. It was coordinated by the Department of Social Development and Employment of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Ministry of Social Development and the Fight against Hunger of Brazil.

The goal of the two-day workshop was twofold: to contribute to the improvement of the strategies and methods of international cooperation regarding social protection, and to analyze the role of the OAS and other regional agencies in the handling of interregional cooperation, with special reference to the perspectives of support and coordination between the Ministries of Social Development and the Inter-American Social Protection Network (IASPN).

The meeting’s agenda included themes like the theoretical aspects of international cooperation with regard to the spread of social policies; the presentation of national and sub-regional experiences in this issue; and the systematization of cooperation mechanisms, tools, and transfer methods.

The workshop included participants from the Ministries and Agencies of Social Development from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Uruguay, as well as representatives from various countries in Europe. The event’s inauguration saw the participation of the Director of the Brazilian Agency for Cooperation (ABC), Minister Marco Farani; the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Social Development and the Fight against Hunger, Romulo Paes; and the Director of the Department of Social Development and Employment of the OAS, Francisco Pilotti.
