New Representative of Ecuador to the OAS Presents Credentials
July 27, 2010
The new Permanent Representative of the Government of Ecuador to the Organization of American States (OAS), María Isabel Salvador Crespo, today presented to Secretary General José Miguel Insulza the credentials that accredit her as ambassador to the hemispheric organization.
During the ceremony, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, the representative of the Government of President Rafael Correa affirmed that she assumes her position “with a constructive spirit to advance and support the important role that the Organization of American States plays.” Furthermore, she took the opportunity to praise the work of the Organization during the conflict between Ecuador and Colombia in 2008 when she was Minister of Foreign Affairs. She said “the OAS proved that its leadership and efforts are meant to guarantee the fundamental principles established by the Inter-American Democratic Charter.”
“It is an honor to be back here, in such a different role but with the clear desire to support the efforts of the Organization and with the help of all of the countries here represented. The OAS continues to be the region’s juridical space where differences between the States are resolved, especially through dialogue and understanding,” said the new ambassador of Ecuador, a country that currently holds the chairmanship of the OAS Permanent Council.
In welcoming the new Ambassador, Secretary General Insulza noted that her presence here “is linked to important memories of this Organization, very difficult moments in recent history.” He also highlighted that the OAS “is a multilateral Organization in which the embassies and representatives work together and converse permanently. It is an enriching experience of political dialogue, of principles and interests but also of the search for agreement and consensus through dialogue.”
Before her appointment as Permanent Representative, Ambassador Salvador had been her country’s representative in the Andean Parliament, Minister of Foreign Relations, Trade and Integration, and Minister of Tourism.
