Message from the OAS Secretary General on the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today commemorated the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples with a call for the protection of the all native peoples of the Americas and urged the full implementation of treaties and other agreements that states have adopted internationally and especially in the Inter-American context.
"The diversity represented by the indigenous peoples of this region demands that we work for the protection of their right to self-determination within the framework of participatory intercultural dialogue," said Secretary General Insulza.
The OAS leader recalled that indigenous peoples are among the most vulnerable groups in the Hemisphere, together with Afro-descendants, migrants and the disabled. "That harsh reality must lead us to make the protection of their rights a part of the political agenda of the governments of our member states."
Finally, Insulza urged the countries of the Hemisphere to "redouble their efforts to end the ongoing discrimination, violence and poverty still faced by indigenous communities, and to support their human and community rights.”
