OAS Secretary General Applauds Mexico's Decision to Translate Convention of Belém do Pará to Indigenous Languages

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed his satisfaction at the decision of the Government of Mexico to translate into 13 indigenous languages the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence against Women (Belém do Pará) and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
The translation of the Convention to the 13 indigenous languages will be carried out by a translation workshop organized by the National Institute of Indigenous Languages of Mexico. The workshop is part of the activities that the National Institute for Women (INMUJERES) of Mexico has undertaken in the framework of the 85th anniversary of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) and in preparation for the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention of Belém do Pará.
The Secretary General said that the translation of the Convention will expand the knowledge of the rights of women to a life free of violence and to access to justice for thousands of indigenous women and girls who have been victims of such violence. The OAS leader said he hopes that other governments will proceed to translate the Convention of Belém do Pará into their indigenous languages to provide these valuable tools to women, as an important tool in their demands for the fulfillment of their rights.
