STATEMENT OF THE OAS SECRETARY GENERAL REGARDING THE MINUSTAH AIRPLANE CRASH
October 9, 2009
“It is with great sadness that I received news of the plane crash that resulted in the deaths of members of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). My first thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, and to them I send my sincere condolences. I also would like to pay my respects to the governments of Uruguay and Jordan, and to our sister family of the United Nations. What happened redoubles the respect and admiration that all of us at the OAS feel for those who are fully dedicated to promoting peace and solidarity far away from their homes, even to the point of sacrificing their own lives. This is particularly true regarding the Uruguayan military, which carries out very important tasks all over the world, and exemplifies the solidarity of Latin America wherever it is needed. At the OAS we will continue our best efforts to promote the goal for which the deceased had been working.”
