OAS Deploys Mission to Municipal Elections in Paraguay

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS) to the municipal elections in Paraguay has begun its deployment to observe Sunday´s vote. The Mission will be composed of 25 experts and observers from 15 countries who will deploy to the 17 departments of the country and the capital city.

The Chief of Mission, former Chief of Staff of the General Secretariat of the OAS, Hugo de Zela, today signed, together with the President of the Superior Court of Electoral Justice (TSJE), Minister Jaime Bestard, the agreement on the Procedures of Observation of the Mission, which guarantees the access of the Mission to all the information on the organization, management and supervision of the electoral process.The agreement was signed in the presence of the Minister of the TSJE María Elena Wapenka.

Ambassador de Zela will hold meetings with electoral and governmental authorities, candidates, members of civil society, and security forces.

Since 1991, when it deployed its first Mission to the country, the OAS has observed 12 electoral processes in Paraguay, including the last general election in 2013. The elections in Paraguay will be the thirteenth Observation Mission of the OAS in 2015.
