OAS SECRETARY GENERAL’S REPRESENTATIVE VISITS BOLIVIA

  December 13, 2007

Raúl Alconada Sempé, special envoy to Bolivia appointed by the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, initiated December 13 an official visit to the South American nation. Alconada will hold meetings with Bolivian authorities to coordinate an electoral observation effort by the OAS during the constitutional referendum that will take place in the country.

The purpose of the meeting is to learn about the country’s political situation, as well as to express the OAS’s support to the Bolivian democratic process, by making itself available to cooperate in solving potential differences through dialogue and negotiation, within the context of full respect to the elected authorities and institutions.

The Government of Bolivia has decided to initiate a complex process of change, which it deemed pending. It is a major challenge where the future of the country is at stake. This challenge requires the effort, patriotism and democratic spirit of the people of Bolivia.
