Colombia: OAS Secretary General Welcomes New Progress toward Peace

  December 15, 2015

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, congratulated today the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP), for reaching an agreement on justice and reparation for the victims of the armed conflict.

For the OAS, this agreement aims to resolve one of the key issues of any peace process and will enable the Colombian society to have a special legal system that will be created as part of the peace process.

According to Secretary General Almagro, "it is a new historic step. It involves creating top conditions for building peace, because it is with access to the rights to find truth, justice, reparation and, in particular, non repetition, that the victims and society can heal the wounds of violence and war.”

The OAS Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP), in the country since 2004, has stressed on many occasions the importance of the victims’ participation in the process.

On this occasion, the OAS urged the parties to ensure the inclusion of victims and their organizations, both in the implementation of this agreement and in decision-making related to truth, justice, and reparation in the peace process.

Finally, the OAS highlighted the efforts by both parties to advance various historic agreements that were reached during this negotiation process, and it reiterates its call for reaching, as promptly as possible, a final agreement with the signing of a stable and lasting peace for Colombia.
