BOLIVIA IS NEW OAS PERMANENT COUNCIL CHAIR

  October 1, 2008

Ambassador Jorge Reynaldo Cuadros Anaya, Bolivia’s Permanent Representative, became Chairman of the Organization of American States (OAS) Permanent Council today, and pledged to ensure that the Organization provide effective, action-based response to the hemisphere’s concerns.

The Bolivian diplomat assumed the Permanent Council Chair during a brief ceremony at OAS headquarters after receiving from his predecessor, Belize Ambassador Nestor Mendez, the gavel symbolizing the authority of the Organization’s second highest decision-making body. The Vice Chair passed, meanwhile, to Jamaica’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Anthony Johnson, who succeeded his Mexican counterpart, Ambassador Gustavo Albin.

Applauding Ambassador Mendez’ leadership, Council Chairman Cuadros Anaya stressed how the Belizean envoy had brought to the discussion “very relevant and very current topics on which our Council must begin to take decisions and action.” The incoming Chairman added: “We hope to begin bringing solutions to problems and thereby make the OAS more effective as an organization that addresses issues in a timely and effective manner.”

“We must rise to the challenge,” Ambassador Cuadros Anaya stated, stressing that accomplishing this would rest as much on the support and participation of member countries representatives as it will on the support and involvement of the OAS Secretariat. He said he was honored to have the support of the members of the General Secretariat and the representatives of the citizens of the Americas.
