OAS Assists Guatemala in Destroying more than Two Thousand Explosive Devices Seized from Criminals

  October 16, 2013

The Organization of American States (OAS) this week assisted Guatemala in destroying an arsenal of weapons, including grenade launchers and 2,079 explosive devices, which were seized from criminals and used as material evidence in criminal proceedings.

Through its Program of Assistance for the Control of Arms and Munitions (PACAM) in Central America, the OAS provides technical, administrative and logistical aid as well as certification of the efforts of the Government of Guatemala in its plans to destroy seized weapons. The assistance takes place within the framework of the Technical Assistance and Cooperation Agreement between the Republic of Guatemala and the OAS General Secretariat on Firearms, Ammunition and Other Related Materials, signed on August 12, 2012.

The verification and destruction operations are being carried out in the Mariscal Zavala Brigade and in Estanzuela, located in Guatemala City, and the operations are performed by the National Civil Police through the Explosive Devices Division and Engineers Corps of the Ministry of Defense. Officers from the Public Ministry and the Public Defender’s Office of Guatemala are also participating.

The OAS, through PACAM, has assisted the Central American region in weapons disposal processes, certifying the destruction of more than 1,658 tons of ammunition, equivalent to 6.5 million rounds of ammunition of various types and calibers. The OAS assistance has been provided thanks to financial contributions from the governments of Canada, Spain, United States and Italy.

The countries of northern triangle of Central America - Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras - have asked the OAS to support the destruction of some 400 additional tons of expired or excess ammunition, as well as management support for arms and ammunition stockpiles, in order to eliminate risks associated with handling these materials.
