OAS Technical Electoral Mission to Uruguay

  October 24, 2014

At the invitation of the Electoral Court of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, the Organization of American States (OAS) sent a technical mission in the context of the national elections to be held on October 26.

On this occasion, the Secretary General of the Organization, José Miguel Insulza, designated the Secretary for Political Affairs, Kevin Casas-Zamora, and the Director of the OAS Department of Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO), Gerardo de Icaza, as delegates. They will be accompanied by the former Governor of the Mexican State of Michoacán, Lázaro Cárdenas Batel, and a team of electoral technology experts.

Following the Mission, DECO will formulate recommendations regarding training, logistics and the process of transmission of results. This activity will be developed in the framework of a technical cooperation project with the Uruguayan electoral authority that started on February 2014. Through this project, the OAS has provided technical advice during simulations and transmission of results, as well as in the design of educational materials and in the training of polling workers.
