OAS Secretary General Condemns Kidnappings Committed by the FARC in Colombia
November 18, 2014
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today condemned the kidnapping of General Rubén Darío Alzate Mora, Commander of Task Force Titán, of Corporal Jorge Contreras Rodriguez and attorney Gloria Urrego, Special Projects Coordinator for the Task Force, which occurred on November 16 in the town of Las Mercedes, Choco, at the hands of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). In addition, he condemned the kidnapping of two members of the armed forces, which occurred on November 9 in Arauca, also at the hands of the FARC.
The Secretary General strongly questioned the illegal operations perpetrated by the FARC at a time when the negotiations for peace in Colombia have been shown to be the only way to achieve peace in the South American country.
In this regard, he expressed his concern over the possible setbacks in talks promoted by the government of President Juan Manuel Santos, who has opted for the path of dialogue to end the violence that damages his country and which he has defended at great cost.
In this context, the OAS leader called on the FARC to be responsible to Latin America and not to discard the progress made in the Havana talks, in which the hopes of the Colombian people and the international community have been placed.
Finally, the Secretary General called for the immediate release in good health of all persons deprived of their liberty, and with the absolute conviction that dialogue is the only way forward, urged all actors to promote conditions allowing for the resumption of talks and that they be brought to a successful conclusion.
