OAS and Israeli Agency for International Development Cooperation Sign Memorandum of Understanding
December 12, 2014
The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Agency for International Development Cooperation of Israel (MASHAV) today signed a memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation on issues related to integral development, gender equality, disaster mitigation, and security, in a ceremony that took place at the headquarters of the Organization in Washington, DC.
After signing the agreement, the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, recalled that Israel has been an Observer to the OAS for more than 40 years, “and together we have done a great deal in the areas of early childhood education, the environment, disaster relief, sustainable agriculture, and more recently in security, community police training, public and civil security, crisis management and civil emergency planning.”
Secretary General Insulza expressed his gratitude that “Israel is continuing to support the Young Americas Business Trust, to train young entrepreneurs to apply their talents and create economic opportunities and growth,” and in concluding his remarks, expressed his hope that “we will continue working together, given that after forty years of fruitful partnership, we are true partners and we can work together on many things.”
For his part, the Ambassador of Israel to the United States and Permanent Observer to the OAS, Ron Dermer, said that his country “is very eager to expand our relations with Latin America” and said Israel “has made a decision to increase its number of embassies in the region, which is not an easy decision” in the current economic climate. “Israel is a young country and we have developed very quickly. We have great lessons to learn and great expertise in a few fields,” added Dermer, and mentioned among them agriculture, security, technology, medicine, science, and health.
But above all, the Israeli Ambassador said his country is expert “in doing more with less,” and mentioned as an example its efforts on conservation of water. That, combined with the reach of the OAS, he said means “the sky is the limit” for the partnership between Israel and the Pan-American institution.
The ceremony was attended by the Secretary for External Relations of the OAS, Alfonso Quiñonez; and the Interim Director of the Department of International Affairs, Jane Thery, among others.
