OAS Secretary General Congratulates Prime Minister of Canada on Electoral Win

  May 6, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, congratulated the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, on his party’s victory in the general elections held in the North American country on Monday, May 2nd, and on his reelection at the helm of the Canadian Government.

“The elections in Canada were vigorously contested, but true to the country’s democratic traditions these took place in a free, fair and transparent manner and in a calm atmosphere on the day of the elections,” Secretary General Insulza said in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Harper. “I am therefore confident that the results of the election would serve to strengthen the system of democracy and governance in Canada,” he added.

The head of the hemispheric Organization recalled in his letter that Canada “has been a strong and consistent partner in the work and efforts of the OAS in the Hemisphere. I therefore look forward to enhancing this relationship with you and other members of your government in the years ahead.”

Secretary General Insulza concluded his message by extending Prime Minster Harper “best wishes for a successful term of office.”
