OAS Secretary General Welcomes U.S. Ratifying Trade Agreements

  October 13, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, welcomed the Ratification by the U.S. Congress of the trade agreements with Colombia and Panama, and the extension of the Andean Trade Preferences Act (ATPDEA). The passing of both agreements is an important signal to the region “only six months ahead of the Summit of the Americas Cartagena 2012.”

“This is very good news for Colombia and Panama, but also for the United States and the Hemisphere as a whole. Promoting trade means overcoming hurdles, building bridges, bringing people together, creating jobs and stimulating reciprocal knowledge and respect among the peoples of the Americas,” said Secretary General Insulza.

He said “these agreements join many other trade agreements signed lately between countries in the region, a trend that sends a clear political signal: the countries of the Americas are committed to their neighbors, both in word and in deed.”

The head of the OAS congratulated the Government of President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Democrats and Republicans in Congress on their efforts to see the agreements ratified and highlighted that the last political obstacle has been eliminated for them to come into effect. He also welcomed the efforts made by successive governments in Colombia and Panama to achieve passage of the agreements almost five years after their signature.

Similarly, the OAS official welcomed the extension of the Andean Trade Preferences, which “since entering into force in 1991 has multiplied exponentially exports from Colombia and Ecuador, providing jobs and promoting prosperity for thousands of citizens while bringing greater effectiveness to drug eradication programs in which both countries are very much involved.”
