In San Salvador, Ministers of Labor of the Americas Will Discuss Measures to Promote Employment and Social Inclusion as Key Issues for Economic Development
October 26, 2011
The Ministers of Labor of the Americas will meet in San Salvador on October 31 and November 1st at the XVII Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor, sponsored by the Organization of American States (OAS) in the framework of the preparatory events for the Sixth Summit of the Americas to be held in April 2012 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
The conference, this time under the theme "Advancing economic and social recovery with suitable development, decent work and social inclusion," will seek to conclude with the adoption of the Declaration of San Salvador (draft available here), in which the OAS Member States would agree to take action to achieve goals set on the most pressing labor issues in the region.
The ministerial meeting, held every two years, will be inaugurated by the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, the President of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, and the Labor Minister of that country, Humberto Centeno. Discussions will focus on three themes: employment at the heart of strategies to create a strong, sustainable and balanced economy; how to move forward in building fairer conditions at work; and the scourge of child labor as an obstacle to the development of societies.
The Secretary General said on the subject of the meeting that "we still have challenges in our region in the workplace, such as youth unemployment and gender inequality," and noted that the obligations arising out of the meeting will help to strengthen "the dialogue, collaboration and solidarity between the Ministries of Labor of the region."
In addition to the labor ministers of the hemisphere, the meeting will be attended by representatives of the major trade unions and business associations in the hemisphere, as well as various international organizations.
The Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor (CIMT) of the OAS is the principal hemispheric forum for discussion and policy work. The meeting formulates priorities and guidelines that guide the actions of cooperation needed to address the employment challenges of the region.
