REMARKS BY THE SECRETARY GENERAL
OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES
JOSE MIGUEL INSULZA
COMMEMORATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
March 8, 2009
Today, March 8, the world is celebrating International Women’s Day. For many, it will doubtless be an occasion to reflect on the eradication of violence against women, the feminization of poverty and of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, the trafficking and smuggling of persons, especially women and children, and inequality in pay women and men receive for the same job.
We, as an Organization, are not oblivious to these still pending tasks that shape the social life of our times. On the contrary, for the OAS, all of them are crucial topics on our agenda, huge ongoing challenges, despite all the battles waged and all the progress achieved, and they are goals we will continue to fight for.
However, in our quest for solutions, we need to involve the whole of society. That is essential if women are to achieve the full exercise of their rights, including political participation and access to decision-making.
Just over one month from now, in Trinidad and Tobago, we will be holding the Fifth Summit of the Americas. The human prosperity we long for, energy security, and environmental sustainability – the leitmotifs of that hemispheric meeting – cannot surely be attained without true democracy permanently rooted in the principles of equality, equity, social justice, and full respect for women’s rights.
For that and many other reasons, on this important day, I would like to pay tribute to all those who advocate women’s rights. But I would especially like to direct these remarks to the women who strive anonymously for this cause on farms and in trade unions, companies, and homes and who contribute with their participation in their communities to the wellbeing of their fellow citizens.
Only if we are united will we be able to progress toward the achievement of our ideals. I wish all of you a very happy Women’s Day!
