50 Years Defending Human Rights

The year 2009 is an important one for the Inter-American Human Rights System because we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR), the 40th anniversary of the American Convention on Human Rights and the 30th since the establishment of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. For this reason, during the month of November, OAS Member States joined in a celebration with a series of activities aimed at highlighting and recognizing the importance of these organizations, their accomplishments throughout the years and the experiences and challenges that lie ahead in our continent as we continue to build an environment of personal freedom and social justice, founded on respect for and guarantees of Human Rights
