The OAS Secretariat for Multidimensional Security (SMS) promotes and coordinates cooperation among Member States, the Inter-American System, and other international bodies to effectively address security threats. With the vision of becoming the leading hemispheric authority, the SMS operates under the Declaration on Security in the Americas, which introduces a multidimensional approach encompassing traditional threats and new concerns. Additionally, the SMS serves as the branch of the General Secretariat responsible for supporting the Committee on Hemispheric Security of the OAS Permanent Council, strengthening its central role in the regional security framework.

Building a Secure Future for All: The OAS Commitment to the Region
In an increasingly interconnected world, development and security are closely linked. Sustainable progress is impossible without a safe and stable environment, and security cannot be guaranteed without promoting comprehensive societal development. It is with this conviction that the Charter of the Organization of American States enshrined as its primary purpose "to strengthen the peace and security of the continent."
However, violence and crime have been persistent issues in the Americas, posing a threat not only to the physical well-being of citizens but also to the strength of democratic institutions. Our continent, home to 12.5% of the world's population, accounts for one in three homicides globally, with over 7 out of 10 committed with firearms. This issue carries a high economic, social, and human cost, particularly affecting the most vulnerable populations in our countries. Insecurity has become a significant hindrance to progress for the entire region.
Promoting security is an urgent challenge that requires a multidimensional approach—one that encompasses prevention, law enforcement, social reintegration, and institutional strengthening.

The organization possesses the technical capacity and necessary experience to assist in implementing effective security strategies.
