AG/RES. 1387 (XXVI-O/96)
FELLOWSHIP AND TRAINING PROGRAMS
(Resolution adopted at the eighth plenary session, held on June 7, 1996)
THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,
CONSIDERING:
That the fellowship programs make an important contribution to the development efforts of the countries;
That the General Assembly has always assigned high priority to the human resource training activities carried out through the fellowship programs;
That, through resolution AG/RES. 627 (XII-O/82), the General Assembly decided to provide a specific budget item to finance the Special Fellowships for the Caribbean Program (SPECAF); and
That the Caribbean Scholarship Program (CASP), at the end of which the decision was made to recommend this new budget item, also included other member countries of the Caribbean Basin as beneficiaries; and
HAVING SEEN section III.A.4.a of resolution AG/RES. 1381 (XXVI-O/96),
RESOLVES:
1. To reiterate that the member states attach great importance to the Organization's fellowship programs.
2. To instruct the Permanent Council to include in the report requested in section III.A.4.a of resolution AG/RES. 1381 (XXVI-O/96) the extension of the undergraduate Special Fellowships for the Caribbean Program to benefit other Caribbean Basin states, including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Central American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama), and Bolivia, Ecuador, and Paraguay.
3. To extend the list of countries in which fellowship holders may pursue their studies, enabling them to study at prestigious institutions and universities in any of the member states.
4. To direct that funding for implementation of this resolution shall be drawn from external and other funding sources.
