CANADA
COMMUNICATES ITS CONSENT TO RECEIVE ON-SITE VISITS OF THE OAS
ANTICORRUPTION MECHANISM
Canada
joins the States Parties to the Mechanism for Follow-up on the
Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (MESICIC)
that have expressed their consent to on-site visits, as part of that
Mechanism’s review process for the framework of the Fourth Round that
will begin in 2012.
In a letter signed by Ambassador Allan Culham, Permanent Representative
of Canada to the OAS, Canada formally notified this to the Technical
Secretariat of the MESICIC, in accordance with the
Methodology for Conducting On-site Visits.
In expressing Canada’s consent, Ambassador Culham noted that “Canada
remains a strong supporter of the work of the Committee of Experts and
its efforts to promote the objectives of the Inter-American
Convention against Corruption. On-site country visits will
undoubtedly make the review process more transparent and inclusive,
which in turn will prove beneficial to all parties involved.”
To date, 18 of the States Parties have formally expressed their consent
to these visits, including: Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada,
Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras,
Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, the United States and
Uruguay.
Over the coming days, the Technical Secretariat of the MESICIC expects
to receive similar notifications from other States, which have reported
that they are taking the steps needed domestically to formalize their
consent.
