Tobago Keys Marine Park, St. Vincent
and the Grenadines. January 11-12,
2010
Economic Valuation of Goods and Services
Derived from Coral Reefs
in the Tobago Cays Marine Park
The Grenadines are
geologically older than St. Vincent and are situated on an extensive
shallow bank of which three-quarters lie in less than 50 m of water
(Gill 2006). This creates ideal conditions for the formation of
productive seagrass beds, mangroves and coral reefs. The Tobago Cays
are located in the Southern Grenadines about 50 kilometres south of
the island of St. Vincent. The marine park encompasses an area of
1.4 km2. and includes the inhabited island of Mayreau (~250
residents) and 5 uninhabited islands (Petit Rameau, Petit Bateau,
Jamesby, Baradal and Petit Tabac).
In
1987, the Tobago Cays Marine Conservation Area was established with a focus
on managing fisheries resources and was subsequently reclassified as
the Tobago Cays Marine Park (TCMP) (Pena 2006). Over the years a
multi-stakeholder board was established and a park manager was selected.
Numerous management plans were drafted over the years without significant
implementation. Currently the entire Grenadines are in the process
of applying to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
