IACHR Press Office
Washington D.C. - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) informs that Commissioner José Luis Caballero Ochoa will assume the following rapporteurships, in compliance with Article 15 of the Rules of Procedure:
The seven members of the Inter-American Commission are responsible for country and thematic rapporteurships, which can be found at the IACHR website.
Commissioner Caballero Ochoa, a Mexican national, was elected by the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) on September 5, 2023. His mandate will run until December 31, 2025. His candidacy was presented by the State of Mexico last July, following the resignation of Joel Hernández García, who left the position of Commissioner during his second term after being appointed Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the Mexican Foreign Ministry.
The IACHR is a principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), whose mandate derives from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission is mandated to promote the observance and defense of human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The IACHR is composed of seven independent members who are elected by the OAS General Assembly in their personal capacity and do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
