OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION THANKS KOREA’S FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION
Washington, D.C., July 3, 2007 – The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the OAS expresses its gratitude for the important financial contribution of $ 30,000 provided by the government of Korea.
This contribution aims to support the activities of the Office of the Special Rapporteur in promoting and defending the right to freedom of expression.
Korea’s Alternate Observer to the OAS, counselor Chong-on Won, gave the donation in the name of his government during a meeting with the Special Rapporteur for the Freedom of Expression, Ignacio J. Alvarez.
Chong-on Won said that the contribution "is a way to strengthen freedom of expression, as well as to promote human rights in the hemisphere, bearing in mind Korea’s improved profile in international organizations."
In thanking the Republic of Korea for its support, Alvarez said that "the financial contribution of Korea, an important country which is a permanent observer to the OAS, is also an expression of political support to the work of the Office of the Special Rapporteur on the difficult situation of the freedom of expression within the region."
The Office of the Special Rapporteur welcomes "this manifestation of financial and political support, which joins others expressions of support received from OAS member countries and other permanent observers."
