OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION THANKS ITALIA’S FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION

Washington, D.C., July 10, 2007 – The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the OAS expresses its gratitude for the financial contribution of 24,194 Euros provided by the government of Italy.

This contribution aims to support the activities of the Office of the Special Rapporteur in promoting and defending the right to freedom of expression within the Americas.

The Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Ignacio J. Alvarez, said that this contribution is framed in "the traditional support of the Italian government to the Inter American human rights system."

Alvarez said that "the financial contribution of Italy, an important country which is a permanent observer to the OAS, is also an expression of support to the work of the Office of the Special Rapporteur on the difficult situation of the freedom of expression within the region."
