The Government of Brazil ratified today at the Organization of American States (OAS) the Inter-American Convention against Racism, Racial Discrimination and Related Forms of Intolerance.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, highlighted the relevance of the ratification. "We congratulate the Government of Brazil and its people for the ratification of this Convention, a fundamental step toward ending racism in the hemisphere. We reiterate our call to the OAS member states to endorse and ratify this instrument," he said.

The Permanent Representative of Brazil to the OAS, Fernando Simas, affirmed that "for the Brazilian State, the objectives of the Inter-American Convention against Racism, Racial Discrimination and Related Forms of Intolerance must be achieved at all levels of human interaction."

The Convention was adopted by the OAS General Assembly in 2013. The deposit of Brazil's act of ratification brings the number of States Parties to the Convention to six. The other countries are: Antigua and Barbuda, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico and Uruguay.
