The Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the Organization of American States (OAS), Washington Abdala, today assumed the interim chair of the Permanent Council for the next quarter.

Ambassador Abdala highlighted the common principles and values between his country and the OAS and emphasized that the hemispheric institution is the main political forum in the hemisphere. "I want to thank my country for allowing me to contribute to this Organization, every day that we have of collective work I am fully aware of the relevance of our task to change realities."

For his part, the outgoing interim Chair and Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda, Ronald Sanders, wished his South American colleague success in his term at the helm of the Council. "I am very pleased to hand over the chair of the Permanent Council to the distinguished Ambassador of Uruguay, Washington Abdala. I wish him well during his tenure.”

Uruguay holds the rotating Vice Chair of the Permanent Council for this period, and the Chair is held by Peru. However, the Permanent Representative of Peru, Hugo de Zela, said he was unable to assume the position. This does not imply that Peru will relinquish its right to assume the chair before September 30.
