OAS Honors Former Paraguayan Ambassador Elisa Ruiz Díaz

The Organization of American States (OAS) today paid tribute to the memory of former Paraguayan Ambassador Elisa Ruiz Díaz by placing a plaque with her name on it in the office of the Secretary General at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro recalled that, since her arrival at the OAS as Permanent Representative of her country eight years ago, the Paraguayan diplomat defended as her own the basic pillars of the Organization. "I would like to express my eternal recognition and gratitude for all the work she did for the OAS, in each of the committees she served on and in each of the events she attended, whether in the defense of democracy or in addressing budgetary issues, and for her constant good faith with all of us who worked with her."

For her part, María Paz, daughter of former Ambassador Ruiz Díaz, emphasized that throughout her life her mother "fought for the rights of others." "My mother fought for democracy, diplomacy and peace, and it is with these ideals that I want to dedicate this tribute to her," she added.

Meanwhile, Gustavo Cinosi, Senior Advisor to Secretary General Almagro, read a letter sent by the President of Paraguay, Mario Abdo. "The news of the passing of Ambassador Ruíz Díaz has very sadly impacted the Paraguayan Government. However, the expressions of affection received after her departure from all over the hemisphere have shown that, in addition to being an excellent professional, she was a person very much appreciated by her colleagues and peers. Likewise, her professional career as a Paraguayan diplomat to the OAS made her country proud, being the first woman to be appointed to the position of Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the Organization."

Ambassador Ruíz Díaz passed away on May 19, 2021 while she was serving as Chair of the Permanent Council.
