OAS Signs Agreement for Electoral Observation Mission in Brazil
July 5, 2022
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, the Minister President of the Superior Electoral Court of Brazil, Luiz Edson Fachin, and the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the OAS, Otávio Brandelli, signed today two agreements regarding the OAS Electoral Observation Mission for the general elections to be held in that country on October 2, 2022: one regarding privileges and immunities for observers and the other regarding observation procedures.
After signing the agreement on procedures, the President of the TSE of Brazil emphasized that "the OAS has a long history of professionalism and excellence in electoral observation. Any electoral system in any country in the world would benefit from quality electoral observation missions such as those carried out by the OAS. The same is true in Brazil."
Secretary General Almagro, for his part, highlighted that in these elections, more than 149 million people will head to the polls. "We are pleased to accept this invitation, a sign of openness on the part of the Government of Brazil and the Superior Electoral Tribunal, and we confirm our intention to deploy what will be the third OAS Electoral Observation Mission to Brazil," he said.
The Mission will observe key aspects of the process in areas such as electoral organization, electoral technology, voting abroad, political-electoral financing, political participation of women, political participation of indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants, electoral justice, campaigns, and freedom of expression, among other issues.
The OAS has deployed Electoral Observation Missions in Brazil in 2018 and 2020.
