The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today concluded the debate on inequality convened in New York by the President of the UN General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic, with a call to keep the fight against inequality alive.

“When we discuss the problem of inequality, we are not only speaking of an unequal distribution of income and assets, we’re also concerned with the gaps in opportunities and access to and quality of services such as education, health care, housing, social protection, financial services and justice, among others,” said Secretary General Insulza.

The leader of the hemispheric institution recalled that, in order to support efforts to guarantee fair and equal treatment of the citizens of the Americas, the member states approved, at the recent OAS General Assembly in Antigua, Guatemala, the Inter-American Convention against Racism, Racial Discrimination, and Related Forms of Intolerance and the Inter-American Convention against All Forms of Discrimination and Intolerance.

During the event, Secretary General Insulza met with his UN counterpart, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The OAS leader also took part, along with the UN leader and President Jeremic, in the opening of the thematic debate on inequality.
