The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, was received today by the President of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, during an official visit to the Central American country.

The leader of the hemispheric Organization delivered to President Funes the Report on the Drug Problem in the Americas, prepared by the OAS under his supervision following a mandate from the Sixth Summit of the Americas in 2012, which opened the current debate in the Hemisphere on the issue.

During the meeting, President Funes and Secretary General Insulza also discussed the processes currently underway in El Salvador in which the OAS is participating, in particular the truce between gangs, which has so far produced encouraging results.

The Secretary General said, "we are aware that it is a process with ups and downs, but for the OAS it is important to look at the big picture and see how many people died two years ago and how many are dying today." "The main issue is the reduction of violence. Many lives have been saved and that for us is very important," he added.
