The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the OAS, Wendy Acevedo, signed today the agreement on privileges and immunities for the sending of an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to the elections of president, vice president and members of the Legislative Assembly that will be held on February 4, 2024 and the election of deputies to the Central American Parliament, municipal councilors and a second presidential election if necessary on March 3, 2024, in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

Secretary General Almagro thanked the Government of El Salvador for the invitation to observe the elections and highlighted that the date of the elections, February 4, 2024, will mark 62 years since the first OAS electoral observation mission in 1962. Since then, said the Secretary General, “Our missions have become wide-ranging professional exercises that support member states in their continued efforts to strengthen and update their electoral systems.”

For her part, Ambassador Acevedo explained that the election will be the first time that voting will be implemented abroad to carry out the presidential and legislative elections, through remote voting over the internet and in-person electronic voting. Moreover, she highlighted that "El Salvador demonstrates its commitment to democracy at a transcendental moment for the future of Salvadorans."

The OAS has deployed 15 MOES to El Salvador, including the recent 2021 Legislative and Municipal Elections, and the 2019 Presidential Elections.
