The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the President of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) of the Dominican Republic, Román Jáquez Liranzo, today signed the agreement on procedures for sending an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) for the municipal elections of February 18 and the presidential and congressional elections of May 19, and, if necessary, a second round, on June 30.

During the signing ceremony at the headquarters of the hemispheric organization in Washington D.C., the President of the Central Electoral Board of the Dominican Republic, Román Jáquez Liranzo, expressed thanks for the constant “technical cooperation that the Organization has provided” to the entity he leads and said “the world will see through the OAS the transparency, security, justice and commitment of the Central Electoral Board to provide the Dominican Republic with positive and historically democratic elections.”

For his part, Secretary General Almagro recalled that the Organization and the JCE have had a long and close relationship in electoral matters and highlighted that “the initiatives developed together are a reflection of the Board's commitment to institutional strengthening and to constantly working for better elections.” In addition, he thanked the JCE for the trust “to continue contributing to the electoral processes in the Dominican Republic. From the General Secretariat we will continue to collaborate closely with your institution and with the country.”

Once the electoral processes are concluded, the Mission will present its report with observations and recommendations to the OAS Permanent Council.
