Secretary General Insulza Meets with Authorities from the Anti-Drug Commission of the OAS

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the Chair of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) and Deputy Minister of Public Health and Provision of Services of Colombia, Fernando Ruiz Gómez, and the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Paul Simons, at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington DC.
Secretary General Insulza and the two CICAD authorities discussed the conclusions of the 55th Regular Session of the Commission, held this week at OAS headquarters in the U.S. capital. In the biannual meeting of the CICAD participants continued with the analysis of current drug policies in the Hemisphere, in compliance with the mandate received from the leaders of the region at the Summit of the Americas in 2012.
Secretary General Insulza, Chair Ruiz Gómez and Executive Secretary Simons also discussed the next steps ahead of the 44th OAS General Assembly, which will take place in Asunción, Paraguay between June 3 and 5; and in particular the preparations for the Special OAS General Assembly to be held in Antigua, Guatemala, which will focus on the global drug problem. The conclusions of the Special OAS General Assembly will serve as a basis for the debate to be held by the United Nations General Assembly on drug policies in 2016.
