The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Supreme Court of Mexico signed today at the headquarters of the judiciary body a cooperation agreement on the dissemination and promotion of international law with the aim of promoting the protection of human rights.

The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, said the agreement will allow for the training of judges and members of the Mexican judiciary to better understand the Inter-American system, and will facilitate the dissemination of case law and the work of the Court among the countries of the region, through the joint organization of conferences, seminars and workshops. "This is a general agreement on cooperation in dissemination and promotion of international law which we hope will be implemented through activities of common interest to be identified shortly," said Secretary General Insulza.

The agreement also includes the promotion and dissemination of international law; international legal cooperation; the development and implementation of research projects or comparative studies on topics of common interest; and the joint production of publications, among other initiatives.

For his part, the President of the Supreme Court, Luis María Aguilar Morales, highlighted the importance of the agreement for the entity that he leads. "We are convinced that for the best performance of the work of this high court, joint efforts are always welcome. We therefore open our doors to strengthen the bonds of friendship and inter-institutional collaboration for the benefit of the society that comes to us in search for justice."

Present at the signing ceremony were the President of the National Human Rights Commission of Mexico, Luis Raúl González Pérez; the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the OAS, Emilio Rabasa; the Ministers of the High Court; the Directors of the Federal Judiciary; and Judges of the Federal Electoral Tribunal, among others.
