The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today commemorated the centenary of the passing of Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío, by holding a special meeting and laying a wreath at the foot of the writer’s bust in the OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, described Darío as an “example of the cultural heritage, in the broadest meaning of the word,” and he underscored the projection of his universally-recognized work “that still affects the social and political context.”

Ambassador Jesús Sierra Victoria, Vice Chair of the Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Panama to the OAS, who chaired the meeting, indicated that “the immortality of Rubén Darío was already sealed by the product of his pen.”

The Permanent Representative of Nicaragua, Ambassador Denis Moncada, summarized the role of his fellow countryman as “the precursor and father of modernism that characterizes Latin American and Caribbean ability and literary genius.”
