The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Universidad de San Martín de Porres (USMP), based in Lima, today signed an extension of their agreement of cooperation to continue the OAS “Lecture Series of the Americas” for an additional period of 12 months.
The Lecture Series of the Americas was created by the OAS Permanent Council with the objective of promoting democratic principles and values in the countries of the hemisphere. The monthly conferences are focused on the key subjects of the hemispheric agenda, such as the strengthening of democracy, human rights and social development.
Among other things, the extension of the agreement establishes that the USMP will make a contribution of $180,000 for the development of at least four lectures during the rest of 2010 and four during 2011.
OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin asserted that the Lecture Series of the Americas offers a “panorama of issues that deal with the real lives of people of the Americas,” and “ultimately that is the perspective that the Chairman of the Permanent Council and others are advocating. This organization is in the service of the people of the Americas through the Member States, and the Series is a wonderful partnership with an academic institution that demonstrates that this organization is there for all.”
For his part, USMP Rector Raúl Bao García said that to the institution he heads it is “very satisfactory to be here again reaffirming the commitment of our institution to continue with this novel and interesting Lecture Series of the Americas with which we have been collaborating, disinterestedly by the way, with our best efforts and resources since 2004.” Also, he added, “the experience has been vast, it has been very enriching, very fruitful and positive, and the results speak for themselves.”
The ceremony for the signing of the document between the OAS General Secretariat and the USMP for the continuation of the “Lecture Series of the Americas” program was held at Organization headquarters in Washington, DC.
