The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today in Santiago, Chile participated in a seminar organized by the United Nation’s Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) focusing on State and Development. The seminar convened important politicians from across the continent, and its opening featured a tribute to Enrique Iglesias, Secretary General of the Ibero-American Secretariat, for his valuable contributions to the field of economic studies of the continent.

In a summary of the ideas proposed by Danilo Astori, Vice President of Uruguay, José Antonio Ocampo, former ECLAC Executive Secretary, and Ernesto Ottone, Political Scientist at Diego Portales University, Secretary General Insulza explained that the central finding of the discussions was the need for greater State participation in the creation of policies aimed at achieving regional sociopolitical and economic goals.

The head of the OAS added that inequality, one of the largest challenges faced by governments in the region, and one which has not yet been overcome, can be combated by public policies aimed at redistributing wealth and reforming taxation.

The meeting, which was opened by ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena, was attended by numerous well-known figures, including former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos; Enrique Iglesias; Paraguayan Finance Minister Dionisio Borda; former Chilean Foreign Minister Juan Gabriel Valdés; and Mexican politician Beatriz Paredes, among others.
