The Organization of American States (OAS) today hosted a group of high-level officials from the “Escuela Superior de Guerra” of the Peruvian Army who attended a presentation on the main tasks and objectives of the programs of the Secretariat for Multidimensional Security, mainly on the issues of public security, drug control and abuse, the threat of terrorism, the promotion of peace and security, disaster relief and human rights.
The OAS Secretary for Multidimensional Security, Adam Blackwell, explained how the issue of security has gained importance for the region, especially in recent years, to the point that it has become one of the main concerns of the citizens of the Americas, even above unemployment, health and economic issues. "For the OAS, democracy, human rights and prosperity are essential, but without security, none of them can be guaranteed," he said.
The program of the meeting, which took place at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, also included presentations by the Interim Representative of the Mission of Peru to the OAS, Minister Raul Salazar; the Head of the Delegation of Peru to the Inter-American Defense Board, Rear Admiral James Llop Meseguer; the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Committee on Terrorism, Gordon Duguid; the Coordinator of the Multilateral Evaluation Mechanism (MEM) of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission, Angela Crowdy; the Director of the OAS Department of Defense and Hemispheric Security, Abraham Stein; the section Chief for Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation, Pablo Gonzalez; and a Specialist from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Daniel Cerqueira.
