The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the First Ladies of Guatemala, Rosa María Leal; of Honduras, Rosa Elena Bonilla, and of Mexico, Margarita Zavala. The three First Ladies are visiting Washington to participate in the Child Migration Forum "On Their Own,” organized by the National Center for Refugee & Immigrant Children, in collaboration with the hemispheric organization.

During the meeting held in the office of the Secretary General, he welcomed the representatives from Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras and expressed his serious interest in the phenomenon of child migration, and the risks that it brings to one of society’s most vulnerable groups, one that needs much greater protection.

The conference, which takes place over three days, brings together activists from private organizations and nonprofit organizations, government officials and experts who will study the current challenges, best practices, and policies that most directly affect unaccompanied immigrant children.

Also present at the meeting were Mrs. Georgina Nuñez de Insulza, Lavinia Limon, President and Chief Executive of the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants; Tricia Swartz, Director of the National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children, and the Permanent Representatives of Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.
