The new Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Carlos Alberto Játiva, today presented his credentials to Secretary General Luis Almagro.

During the ceremony at OAS headquarters in Washington DC, Ambassador Játiva recalled his country's commitment to the Organization and added that "the OAS has managed to stand the test of time in moments when we witness with concern the weakening of multilateralism and of concertation mechanisms in our region despite the doubts we have had throughout its history. This Organization has the enormous responsibility of achieving the objectives set out in its Charter and improving the fate of our peoples, eliminating poverty and achieving sustainable development in peace and democracy," said Ambassador Játiva.

In welcoming the new representative of Ecuador, Secretary General Luis Almagro referred to the challenges facing the hemisphere, and said the OAS "must give an adequate, effective and timely response" to them. "I am sure that with your presence and your contribution the OAS will be strengthened and will successfully face the challenges that lie ahead," said the Secretary General.
