The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Chilean Agency for International Development Cooperation (AGCID) today signed a cooperation agreement through which they will expand the project to offer scholarships for the countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and offer training for professionals in the area of climate change, disaster risk management and resilience building.
In signing the agreement, the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro explained that “this project was excellent, not only in terms of the number of people trained, but also with respect to the number of regional institutions and agencies that collaborated with the OAS to implement it.” He said this new contribution "will allow the OAS to continue building on the basis of the solid platform established," and commented on the need to "continue ensuring that the necessary resources are available so that countries of the Caribbean, and other parts of the Americas, can respond effectively to the challenges caused by climate change. ”
For his part, the Executive Director of the AGCID, Juan Pablo Lira, said that these initiatives “further complement the joint effort between AGCID and the OAS to support today's more transversal areas such as natural disasters; we hope that this new collaborative space will contribute during the 2019-2020 period to continue advancing in the training of new specialists in the prevention of natural disaster risks - an area in which Chile is convinced is the way to contribute to the development of our countries.”
The cooperation between the OAS and AGCID in this project has so far trained 984 citizens of 14 Caribbean States, through alliances between the OAS and 17 colleges and universities.
