OAS Secretary General to Participate in the "Regional Meeting of the Open Government Partnership" in Chile

  January 8, 2013

The "Regional Meeting on Open Government: Challenges and Progress in the Open Government Initiative," organized in Santiago de Chile by the Ministry of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of Chile, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and other organizations will be held on January 10 and 11, with the participation of the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, who will take part in the opening ceremony and will speak about the challenges to open government in the Americas.

The event seeks to promote the exchange of experiences and good practices on the issues of access to information, transparency, accountability and citizen participation, in order to strengthen integrity and combat corruption. The meeting also aims to highlight the importance of including the parliaments of the region in the Open Government Partnership; to develop courses of action in support of the Open Government Declaration, adopted in September 2011, which has brought together governments and organizations from 58 countries; to propose projects that can be addressed in a coordinated way by the various parliaments of the hemisphere; and to develop suggestions for strengthening cooperative work in this area.

The meeting, to be held at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile, will also feature the participation of the Director of the Department of International Law of the OAS, Dante Negro, who will talk about access to public information in the plans of the Open Government Partnership and the role of oversight bodies for the compliance with the regulations in this area.
